KSP can be made close enough to our reality to give a decent simulation effect, but there will be gaps. It isn't "the real thing" but I imagine that with the right mods it can actually has some utility beyond the game sandbox. Still not close to a "real" full-motion flight simulator of course. Many colleagues and I actually use X-Plane to review scenarios in upcoming regulatory simulator sessions. X-Plane with the right mods is better in many ways than the instrument procedure trainers owned by airlines. However, especially with mods, they can attain a high level of realism in certain aspects. I hope that when the scientists talk about using KSP as a proper simulator, that they have installed these mods.Īs ever in simulation, there are several levels.Ĭomparing with the aviation world, Microsoft Flight Simulator or X-Plane, in stock form, are not very accurate representations of aircraft operation. Again there is a mod to put pure N-body physics into the game. There are a couple of mods that change the Kerbin system to be an accurate reflection of the solar system with the correct depths of the gravity wells etc.Īnother point is that the orbital mechanics are simplified calculations, using patched conics instead of N-body physics, and the planets and moons are on rails. One note to be aware of, KSP runs at a fractional scale of the solar system and it is easier to launch and rendezvous with planets than it would be in real life. There are mods however that allow you to place launch facilities anywhere and then launch from Eve (the Venus-eq) straight from the assembly building as if you built it there. No because there are no launch sites off of Kerbin's surface by default, you have to land on the body, refuel and then launch again. Yes because you can launch from the surface of any of the planets or moons in the game, and each one has its own gravity/size and some have atmospheres that are thinner or thicker than Kerbin. Science labs are kind of broken OP for gaining lots of science easily in this manner.Does KSP include the most basic variables (launching from Earth-equivalent, always?), or does it allow for one to vary the launching parameters- say, to simulate a launch from Mars-eq, Mun, Titan-eq, et al. Load it with experiments from the surface (even science you have already gathered can be used again in a lab), add a couple of scientists and have them do research.
